Dani Saadu – Unlocking Potential Through Mentoring
There’s more to mentoring than meets the eye. Just ask Dani Saadu, global talent and culture leader and author of The Capex Formula for Learning & Performance.
In his session at the Charity Learning Consortium’s annual conference, Saadu shared the many ways in which mentoring has helped him personally and professionally.
Saadu shared…
A big professional outcome of mentoring has been career development. Through his mentor, Saadu was encouraged to invest time in his growth, gaining additional experiences that helped him land a more senior role. The mentoring relationship also helped him overcome feelings of self-doubt and gave him the confidence needed to succeed and thrive in a new role.
Mentoring has also provided Saadu with an ongoing support network, with mentors becoming trusted advisors as well as helping him build emotional and professional resilience, especially through challenging times.
As a result of his mentoring experiences, Saadu was inspired to mentor others, enriching his own leadership capabilities and expanding his professional network. Mentoring didn’t just help him achieve career success, it enhanced his confidence, supported him emotionally and inspired him to create similar opportunities for others.
“I am very passionate about mentoring. Mentoring has changed my life – it’s helped me in my career. It’s helped me in my work life and in my personal life. It has been so fruitful in my life, I will give up my time to mentor anybody if they ask for it,” he told delegates.
And that is exactly what he did, offering to mentor anyone in the session who wanted to be mentored – many members took him up on his offer.
The session provided tips and advice on why mentoring matters and how it benefits organisations.
Mentoring drives personal and professional growth
Mentoring provides powerful support – mentees gain guidance, encouragement and access to valuable networks, while mentors develop leadership skills and gain satisfaction from helping others. Mentoring can unlock career transitions and create personal breakthroughs.
Mentoring fosters a culture of learning and high performance
Organisations with strong mentoring cultures report higher job satisfaction, improved retention (up to 25%, according to a range of studies) and a boost in internal talent development. A learning culture fuelled by mentoring leads to improved organisational performance and a more engaged workforce.
Mentoring is a two-way street
Both mentoring and being mentored are valuable: mentors gain insight, empathy and new perspectives, while mentees accelerate their learning and confidence. Encourage staff to both seek mentors and offer mentorship to others for collective growth.
Diverse development channels are key
Mentoring is one of a variety of ways employees can support each other. These include:
- Mentoring: sharing expertise and guiding others along a path you’ve walked.
- Coaching: helping individuals learn from their own experience through questioning and reflection.
- Sponsorship: proactively advocating for others to help them access new opportunities.
- Provide multiple avenues for staff to access these three modes of development.
Make mentoring interactive and accessible
Facilitate activities like speed mentoring to foster rapid connections and spark mentoring relationships. These break down barriers and help even the shyest members engage.
Use organisational communication channels (like WhatsApp groups or LinkedIn) to support ongoing connections beyond formal events.
Start small and take action
Learning professionals can initiate informal mentoring relationships right away by reaching out within their network, using professional communities and being proactive offering and seeking support.
Create visible, accessible ways in your organisation for people to find mentors and mentees, reinforcing the message that mentoring isn’t just nice to have, it’s essential.
By incorporating these approaches, L&D can help create organisations where everyone benefits from a vibrant culture of growth, support and connection.
